Calendar Teaching Tips

Stop! Do not throw away old calendars! There are many things you can do with a calendar to reinforce academic skills. Here are some suggestions:

1. Writing - Use the pictures as story starters to have children write an original story, poem, or song centered around them.

Second. Art - Cut out the images and uses them to make your greeting cards. Write original sentences to enter.

3. Classification - a selection of different images available so your children can sort them according to similarity in general ... all pets, all cars, all buildings, etc. Older children can sort into more specific categories, like sports cars, SUVs, etc.

4. Flash Cards - Make your own by putting a photo on one side and writing the word on the other. For older children, write a sentence containing the word. Children have their flash card comment! (NOTE: Cut out the numbers to make math flash cards.)

5. From left to right progression - How to teach children the days of the week, always remember that you are going from the left and right.

6. Days and dates - Ask questions that the days of review dates and ordinal numbers. For example, what day of the week is the third? What is the date of the fourth Wednesday? When autumn begins (day and date)? holiday is September 5?

7. Mathematics - Ask questions to review before and after. For example, what will be the date five days after Labor Day? What will that day be? If National Farm Animals Awareness Week is September 18, what was the date nine days before? Which day was it? What would be the sum if you add the dates of every Tuesday of the month? For older children, make it a problem in 2 parts and you have to subtract, multiply or divide the answer. Using the calendar, what is the difference last Friday and the second Friday? You are multiplying, yet? Skip to color all the boxes in multiples of 8, for example. It would then numbered boxes 8, 16, and 24 completed since you have some days left, the children can learn the word
'Residues' and ready for division!

8. Reading - in alphabetical order all holidays and special days. As syllables are in each name? List the holiday, then the special day. Which countries are represented? Do some research and learn more about unfamiliar days.

I hope that these ideas are helpful and have on your creativity.

And remember ... Reading is fundamental!
