In order to learn at home, in a distance education program first must learn to avoid distractions. These are the things that keep us focused and motivated to learn and study, and if we do not find a way to avoid or eliminate them we can not accomplish what we set out to do.
The first step to reduce distractions to our distance learning program is to identify them. They can include everything from our family and friends, although they certainly do not want to eliminate the noise from inside and outside our house. They may also include the constant intrusion of the phone or our cell phone to the master distracter, television.
Once we have identified the sources of our distractions we can then develop a plan to deal with them. Like most things that need change we need to go first. Start by developing a study plan and a schedule of hours you devote to your program of distance learning. Next determine which room in your house would be the best place for your studies and organize it so that it is comfortable, and hopefully separate from the rest of your family Activities.
Then talk with your friends and family and advice them of your plan and timetable. Ask them for their cooperation during this period of time and respect your need for time, space and quiet to do your homework. It may be necessary to remind your children that they need to keep their music a bit 'more than occasionally and tell your friends to drop over for coffee at another time after your comprehensive studies.
The next step is to reduce the noise level so you can focus on your studies. Find a quiet place in your home so that they are not disturbed by noise adjust your children play, neighbors mow the lawn, or people who have heated discussions and debates that sometimes grow strong with their arguments or laugh. Use headphones if you must, but to create that quiet space that will help you learn.
Finally, turn off the outside world. Turn off your email program and turn off your pagers and personal digital assistants. Unplug the phone to avoid interruptions. Last but not least, turn off the television, master distracter. You can tape the latest episode of your favorite TV series and watch it later, but do not try to do both. You almost always suffer and your distance learning program.
Stay focused, stay motivated, reduce and eliminate distractions, and study hard. You'll have your college degree online in less time than you think.
