"Nothing seems to work with that child!"
Have you ever said those words? If you are working with students very out of control, it is likely that you said those words more than once. You were right. Nothing was working to stop this guy. This article explains why nothing worked, and what you can do that work. Hopefully this article will help you avoid saying those words so often.
Almost everyone has one - that the child is almost gleefully out of control. You know the young. He is what seems to be vulnerable to harass their peers. It seems almost taking pleasure from engaging in problem behaviors, such as property damage, damage to third parties, verbal abuse, and challenge. If you have noticed the heavy use of "he" in sentences last year, which was not by chance. This child tends to be a "he." Can you name the label of mental health that could be used to describe this child?
The answer is "Conduct Disorder", a subject that deeply into our popular Kid Problem-Solver Workshop problems (http://www.youthchg.com.) The term "conduct disorder" means roughly that the child has no conscience, remorse, or ability to report. This means that these children do not care about hurting others or property damage, so do what they want whenever they want, to whoever they wish. Only a mental health professional can diagnose this disorder, so it is very important that if you're not a social worker, counselor, etc., you never say that a child of a disorderly conduct (CD). However, it is good for you to bring this concern in your mind.
Here are the most important information is necessary to work with CD different from all others. If you try to use conventional approaches with CDs, there is "nothing works". There is an explanation of why nothing seems to work with young people. You might be surprised to learn that conduct disorders are a tiny fraction of your students. It is estimated that 11-15% of your CD This means that boys are more likely to have a child with whom nothing seems to work.
In our laboratory, now give you the opportunity to teach this child. Obviously, I can not enter any information in this space. But clearly this is not a child who wants to work with when you have only a smattering of information on how to handle them, I know we will do our best to explain 1.) Why nothing has been working to manage CDs, and 2.) what to do instead - and we'll include a flyer.
1.) Why nothing works
behavioral problems are "wired" differently than other students. This means that they may not be able to cure. Because of this difference, the following interventions fail: and character, values clarification, building empathy, a second chance to make amends, and more - too many to list here. These methods not because the child has to worry about others if these techniques are at work. These approaches are simply not good enough for other children, but can never be of value with the CD in fact worsen the situation of these methods to communicate Because these children do not understand who they are, and do not understand how to control them. This perception usually means that these young people believe that they may be able to do what they want, without having to face the consequences would be of considerable concern to them.
2.) What to do instead
If possible, stop using any intervention which provides child care. For example, stop using empathy-based methods. Stop saying: "Timmy, that makes Juan feel bad when the slap." For a CD, with those words, just a target painted on the back of Juan. Review a list of joint action in # 1 and not use these approaches with children who could be the CD
