7 tips when preparing for a language program abroad
Whether you know zero vocabulary or you are an advanced level in a foreign language, a little preparation can help you get the most out of your immersion language program abroad. Here are some tips from study abroad veterans. Whether you plan to study Spanish, learn Italian, or even become fluent in Japanese, this is advice worth the attention.
1. Set realistic targets
Learning a foreign language is not easy for most of us. It takes time, practice and many mistakes. Go into a program with the goal of increasing your communication skills. Do not assume you are going to refine the language so many weeks or months, is too much pressure.
2. Bolster your vocabulary
If you are a beginner, take a phrase book, preferably with a tape to accompany it (check the e-book Spanish phrase given away at the end of this article). Learn some basic principles such as: "Please," "Thank You", "Where is .." "What ...", Etc. Knowing these phrases and some hand gestures will get you a crunch. For intermediate or advanced speakers, we recommend learning as much vocabulary as possible before I go, including common idioms. Your language instruction will focus mainly on grammar, speaking and listening. The more vocabulary you have to enter the program, you get more ways to apply the language.
All participants must bring a comprehensive dictionary, not just a pocket dictionary. Consider a guide has a section listing local colloquialisms. This ensures that there will be traveling to Ecuador or try to study in Guatemala, with only the knowledge of the Spanish commonly used in Madrid or Barcelona. Being prepared for such spaces can help you get the most out of your language courses and study abroad program.
3. Be able to conjugate verbs important
Learn to conjugate, COLD, those very important verbs like: to wish / want, to be able / can, to be and go. These kinds of verbs conjugated in the present or past, combined with infinite Instantly increase your ability to communicate. If you are an absolute beginner to focus on the "I" and "you" forms of verbs really important.
4. That the language
Do not try and translate everything word for word. Not working. You can drive yourself crazy looking for a word that can not exist in the target language. Recognizing the fact that grammar rules will be different. Learn the differences to the similarities and your understanding of how the language will increase tenfold. Even if you are fluent in Spanish and have spent years studying in Barcelona, if you plan to attend an international language program in Paris you need to become familiar with a new "thought process" for French.
5. In case of doubt, "Literature-ize"
This means try to use "bigger" words. For example, in Spanish, "necessity" does not translate but "necessity" turns into "necesidad", "requirement" to "TEST" and "need" in bloom "exigence". Since these words sound very similar, you will understood. There are examples like these in all languages.
6. The Romance languages are similar
If you know another romance language, you have a leg up to learn Spanish or learn Portuguese. You already know the concept of masculine and feminine words, accents, etc. Many words ending in Y, as freedom will end with: "ad" in Spanish, "e" in French, "ade" in Portuguese, or "A" in Italian. Similarly, words ending in "ion" in English often sound the same, and the same meaning in Spanish.
Learn Chinese or Japanese to study Arabic, Hebrew, or Thai can present unique challenges, as the words are so different from what many of us are accustomed to hearing. More time may be needed to learn these languages, and more pre-trip preparation can be immensely useful. Regardless of the level of difficulty of the language, knowing two or more languages makes any international study program easier, and the benefits of learning a language is not common may far outweigh the disadvantages.
7. Stay Open Minded
The best tool for learning a language at any level is a good attitude. Understanding the culture helps with language acquisition. Do not be afraid to make mistakes, they are great to learn and can be fun! A sense of humor really helps.

Narrowing the options can be a challenging task, but it is important to make an informed choice about where to continue your education.
When you decide which schools to which you would like to apply, you must first evaluate the probability of being accepted. If you are a C student with average test scores and any extra-curricular activities, you might want to put all your eggs in one basket application Ivy League. However, if you can afford, you should always apply to the school of your dreams on the off chance that it can only come through you. If you do not try, you never know whether or not you could get in
If you made a straight throughout high school, have high SAT and ACT test scores and participated in a wide range of activities, it has a high chance to enter at any school of your choice. Even if you have very limited finances to work with, you should still apply to your top choices. If you agree, you may be able to receive scholarships and financial aid, and you can always take out student loans.
When it comes to narrow your choices, the format is a very important thing to consider. Some people, such as extremely large universities with tens of thousands of students. However, others enjoy the comfort of a small campus with only a few hundred students. There are also a variety of schools that are located between these two options. Although it is difficult to know before you get there, you probably have a good idea of your general preferences on school size, and this will help you focus your search.
You should also consider whether you want to go to a private or a public school. Private schools are generally more expensive, but some are more prestigious. Private religious-based schools are also an option. Practically every faith long, at least in college in the United States, and most are several to choose from. If you prefer to stick to secular schools, state-supported schools are often your best deal financially. These schools receive support from the government, in addition to private funding, so they are generally cheaper and offer larger financial aid packages.
Location is also an important factor to consider when choosing a college. Think of how close or how far you'd like to be where you grew up. If you want to be reached by car one day at home, consider the local and regional schools. However, if you are looking for an adventure of skiing, you might consider schools in distant states or even consider studying abroad. Some fields of study are best suited for certain geographical areas as well. For example, artists can get a real-life education in New York City, while the players might consider the school in California. If marine biology is your chosen field of study, a college located in water would obviously be the best choice. Geologists often flock to the southwest, and environmentalists often seek education in the northeast. You should consider both your personal preferences and the climate your career goals, when choosing a university course.
Although the choice of a college can be stressful, but it can also be fun. Remember that the university is only the first step on the professional path, and will be more likely to change majors, interests, and perhaps even change the course before finishing college degree. So make a wise choice and conscious knowing that probably change your mind several times before it's all said and done.

Students - Breathe Your Way to better learning!
Guess what 'the action you performed more often than anyone else in your life? E 'eat? Sleeping? Crying? Laugh? No! Give up? It is to breathe! You were breathing almost non-stop since you were born, with few exceptions.
So with all those years of practice I think you have probably figured out how to do it right now. Would it surprise you to know that your breathing technique probably was better when he was a child than it is today?
Watch how a baby breathes when it is lying on his back. child's abdomen just moves up and down with each breath, rising when the child breathes in and down when the baby breathes out.
This action is caused by the diaphragm, a powerful muscle located under the chest cavity. And 'the movement of the diaphragm pumps air in and out of the lungs.
Take a few minutes to look at the way you breathe now, without changing the way we are doing.
Notice which parts of your body moves as you breathe. What parts of the body does not move? It's the upper chest to fill with air, while the chest and lower abdomen does not move?
Where do you feel tense? Are your shoulders hunched over or sold? Do your shoulders move up and down as you breathe in and out?
If the shoulders move up and down as you breathe, you enter a lot of unnecessary tension and ineffective in your body. You are also wasting a lot of muscular effort to run an inefficient movement. The shoulders are not designed to pump air in and out of the lungs.
Remember that it is the diaphragm which feeds your breath. If you do not know where the diaphragm is located approximately in the bottom of your rib cage beneath your lungs and on the stomach and intestine.
If your breath fills and expands the upper third of the lungs, while the lower two-thirds do not move, did not take oxygen into your body very effectively.
This is a bad habit that many adults have developed. You may end up over-expanding the air sacs in the upper third of the lungs, never the ones at the bottom of the lungs are filled correctly.
Although we have wonderful breathing techniques, such as children, they often develop bad habits and build up physical and emotional tension, as we grow older. These could possibly hinder our breath and our body and the overall effectiveness of the brain.
A quick change in your body will hurt your brain more oxygen than any other organ. Remember that this body can take up to three pounds at 20 to 25% of the oxygen supply to your body!
If you are a student studying, your brain cells need an adequate supply of oxygen. When you do not breathe correctly, your brain cells can not function at its best, and will not be a good student as it could be.
To increase the ability to think clearly and concentrate, make sure to avoid some of the worst six-altering breathing. If the shoulders are bent forward will decrease your ability to breathe. If only the upper chest is filling up, do not take advantage of all the cells in the lower part of the lungs that are desperate to take some 'air for you.
Put your hands on your lower chest, one on each side. As you breathe in and out, you can feel your lungs fill up and pushing out close to the bottom? Or is the whole movement in the upper chest?
Lie down and respiration way a child does. Let your mind and body to become very relaxed and let your abdomen move up and down freely. You may need to give instructions for mental relax your shoulders, chest and abdomen as you breathe.
Spend some 'time to familiarize yourself with this sense of body relaxation. Try to remember the feeling of breathing easily and freely.
When you breathe in and out, do you make a smooth transition from your out-breath to your breath? Have you noticed that sometimes stop breathing? Learn to avoid this habit. Hold your breath, if it is part of a deliberate breathing technique can cause difficulty paying attention while you learn.
For most of the goals of learning what works best is very smooth, relaxed, and the breath flowing in and out, without a break. If you want to slow down brain waves, while you take in new information, you can count slowly and gently, while breathing in and out rhythmically.
For example, breathing easily while you count to four, and breathe on a regular basis for the count of four. You can relax even more effective, by breathing in the count of four and exhaling for a count of six or eight.
Do this easily without effort, for several minutes before starting to study. Do not pause between your in-breath and your breath, make the transition smooth and flowing.
Whenever you are faced with a learning situation, take the time to control your breathing. Make sure you are relaxed and your breathing flow smoothly.
When you breathe more easily, with less stress, your brain cells are better able to get the oxygen they need for you to be a better student!
